There was a call for some maintenance to be done on the systems of the Captain's deck, and so, here he was with Tyr in tow. Arriving, he gave a light knock to the door, before just entering. Who knew what all was going on behind the door before he got there. He really didn't want to walk in on some weird shit going on with the people that worked there. Yep, he pretty much thought they did weird things behind closed doors.
"I'm comin' in, I'm here to run the maintenance," he stated calmly, before entering the the room. With a cigarette in his mouth, he was readily relaxed. Wouldn't be good to mouth off too much to the Captain, she might toss him off the ship or something. Like he knew what she was really like. "Alex from tech central, show me where to get to work," of course, it wasn't actually named tech central, but may as well be.
He glanced at the Captain, it couldn't be said that she wasn't a looker at least. He just hoped she wasn't like Ditz, then he would be scared for his life being aboard the ship. Standing tall, he gave a salute, "Captain." He addressed her directly, though his tone was flat. Despite that she was in charge, he only truly respected people that proved themselves to him. Tyr followed suit with the salute, and also a wide grin as he looked at the Captain.
Glancing towards Tyr, Alex elbowed him slightly, "What's with that goofy ass grin, we're on duty." The Garchomp snorted, before giving him a 'body bump' to knock him a couple feet. Turning with a childish expression, before grinning and waving to the Captain and heading towards the computer area. Alex growled slightly and followed after him, "We'll settle this later." He looked to the Captain for a brief moment, "Which of these needs looking at?"

and if i could take you everywhere there'd be no cause for my despair. And I know we won't touch for months, And your smell will evade me. But our love could survive a war, Without the slightest sore There was no such thing as a slow day when you captained an entire space station, and even less so when something wasn't working right. She'd noticed it right away upon arrive in that morning to start her duties, how a certain holographic display seemed hellbent on flickering and distorting regardless of her efforts. Of course she knew her command station well -- she knew it better than anyone else on that giant hunk of metal. But that didn't mean she was enough of a geek to know how to fix every problem. Leave that to the techies. Which is precisely what she did: turned off the monitor just in case, left a voice message requesting maintenance, and continued on. Or rather, that had been the plan. But it was difficult to focus while the idea of broken equipment lingered in the back of her mind. It was hers, after all, and she preferred everything in working order. Naturally.
Nevertheless, it wasn't as if Acacia was about to just stand there and wait for the thing to fix itself. The key was just to keep busy so she wouldn't be driven insane by the wait, and hope that time would pass quickly. The technicians never took long as long as they weren't too busy, especially since issues related to her job were higher priority (considering navigation failure could put the entire station's welfare in jeopardy). It wasn't as as if the problem of hers was really all that dangerous. But she didn't really feel like mentioning that until after it was looked at.
Knock, knock!
The sound surprised her, and as clumsy as she was she nearly bumped an official-looking gray trigger as she stumbled forward slightly. Who knocked anymore? It was modern technology, most people just put put in their password (since not just anybody can get into her little workspace) and wait for the door to move aside for them. Well, whoever it was seemed keen on letting themselves anyway. Acacia quickly collected herself and turned to face the door just in time to see the man who entered. "Tech central"? Odd nickname aside -- as oddly amusing as it was -- it seemed that they'd finally sent a technician to look at the monitor. Excellent. She paused at the salute before nodding briskly and deciding to ignore the combination of the flat tone and wide grin that she'd received. Weirdos would he weirdos, or something like that.
"That one," She led the way to the stilled electronic, and switched it on with a flick of her finger. "The hologram keeps flickering and giving me static." Her gaze met his for a brief moment: she recognized him, probably from some earlier house call he'd made for her. If she recalled correctly, he wasn't too bad of a guy. Except for that air about him, a bit too much arrogance for her liking. Ah, well. "I assume it's just a problem with the connection, or something like that. But I didn't want to make it any worse for you." With that failed attempt at some kind of a joke, she give another lone nod as if to urge them to work and decided she would be better off getting back to work to distract herself. Before she started hovering like some kind of protective mother.
Throughout all of this, the large frame of an Arcanine had been laying off to the side with his head on his paws and his eyes closed in rest. Besides the twitch he'd made when his master had been startled and a lazy raise of the head when Alex and his Garchomp had arrived, he'd been keeping to himself. Now, however, he gave a leisurely stretch before padding over to Acacia and standing beside her with the occasionally glance over at the other two males in the room. |

Despite that most things seemed to have been forgotten in this day and age, he did have some form of courtesy beaten into him. Plus, he really didn't want to walk into something both creepy and disturbing. He already had enough crap to deal with, he didn't feel like adding insanity to the list. Despite the lack of formal respect, he did at least acknowledge he as captain. Which meant something coming from him as well.
Of course, there was one thing that bugged him about her, since they had met a few times. She always seemed to think of herself as nothing more than her position, like it was all that mattered. When she pointed to the screen and turned it on, he nodded slightly at the problem. He could already give a guess as to what was causing it, he had dealt with a lot of holo-projectors going bad. This one wasn't too bad off at least, when she made the joke he nodded. "Well, I'm grateful for that, too many people try to repair things they shouldn't," he commented like it was a serious comment. Mostly just to bug her a bit, try to see if he could get her to crack the whole captain persona.
He immediately went to work though, keeping the lit cigarette in his mouth as he worked. This wouldn't be as hard to work with as the stuff Ditz broke at least. Opening the panel to it, he held his hand out for Garchomp to give him one of the tools. He'd trained Tyr to know which tools were for what kind of tech. It came in handy with situations like this. The dragon taking the right tool, and handing it to Alex, so that he could begin to tweak a few things within the holo-projector's system. "When I'm done with it, it'll work better than before," his tone was oddly sincere for him. One of the few things that he took very seriously, was giving his guarantee.
Without looking away from her, he asked her a question, "So, are you still foolishly chaining yourself to your job like it's all you are? Or are you realizing that you are actually a person beyond the job?" It was probably a question most would avoid asking the CAPTAIN of the ship. However, he hated people that only saw themselves as their job or saw something as destiny. He hated being controlled by anything, he chose to be a technician, and he was choosing to live his life how he wanted.

and if i could take you everywhere there'd be no cause for my despair. And I know we won't touch for months, And your smell will evade me. But our love could survive a war, Without the slightest sore She could tell as soon as she'd shown him the screen in question that he knew what he was doing. Not a second after and he even seemed to have a good guess as to what was causing the malfunction. These techies really knew what they were doing: Acacia was always rather amazed by their apparent skill, and even envied the surety and devotion they seemed to have to their work. Then again, she certainly made an effort to be as rooted to her own occupation as she could be, and she was sure it showed in her demeanor.
... And speak of the devil. Just that comment coming from him jogged her memory as to where she'd met him before, one or two fix-it jobs she'd previously requested. Up until his little comment he'd been working rather adamantly by the looks of it. Even his Pokemon was pitching in, nearly as equally as Alex himself was. For a minute she'd allowed herself to slip back into her own little working world of tapping projectors and letting computers approximate her calculations -- the relaxing stuff, at least in her book -- and with Heracles by her side, it was even easier to drift off a bit. She almost starting humming to herself like she often did. Perhaps it was a good thing that she was interrupted before her subconscious mind had the chance.
It wasn't that the question was stated particularly forcefully or something like that. But the bluntness of it caught her off guard, and she mentally took a nasty stumble. What was with him, really? First knocking, and now not holding back at all with what he was saying. Then again, she couldn't deny that the straightforward honesty of it was a bit refreshing. Most people on the station would give her a lot of respect and honor for the important role that she played, and were a tad reserved and painfully polite at times when they dealt with her. Apparently not with him, though. Acacia could even feel herself bristling a little from the nerve of it. Maybe, just for kicks, she could pretend to be the dangerous-to-mess-with power-holding captain that she could be if she chose; if only to see the reaction she'd receive. But it wasn't as if she could deny the truth behind his words. When he put it like that, it sounded rather... Pathetic.
"I prefer to call it 'taking my job seriously'." |
She replied snoothly after letting herself recover for a moment. Might as well twist his words around back to how she preferred to think of it. "I don't pretend to be some kind of robot, you know. That's what that computer you're fixing is for." Beside her, Heracles twitched his tail and looked over at Alex again, exhaling loudly through his nose in what almost sounded like a snort. It nearly made her crack a smile, and she petted his head for the gesture. Always looking our for me, aren't you? She emitted a small vague shrug perhaps meant for Alex but ultimately directed at nothing in particular. Then, turning the rest of the way to face him, she leaned back slightly against the dashboard behind her and rested her hands along the edge for the extra leverage and allowed herself to wonder what kind of refute he might come up with.[/blockquote][/div]

Of course he was quite good at his work, this was something he actually enjoyed doing. Who knew if it actually showed on his face or not though. He really didn't care about things like that, it was more important to get the machine repaired. With Tyr helping out as well, it was even easier getting things repaired. Since he didn't have the need to go rummaging through the toolbox, and could focus on the repairs. This was one of the few times where people would not see the arrogant side to him, but rather the side that was proud of his work.
There was a long silence from his words before she actually stated something in return. He was going to make a comment on the long wait, but decided against it as he continued working. "There's a difference between taking your job seriously and making it your life," he retorted. Which was what he saw her doing, which was just stupid in his mind. "I never said you were a robot, but you should try to do more than just be a captain," hell, he didn't even let being a technician control his life, he was also a bartender. Plus, he still made time to do things for himself, despite his seemingly hectic schedule.
When the Arcanine snorted, Tyr did in response as well. He wouldn't let anyone look down on Alex, no matter who they were. "Why not come down to the bar later, at least. You might actually enjoy yourself," he commented. He was pretty much ignoring the Pokemon with their snorts towards whoever. "I'll be bar-tending, so I can make whatever drink you want," shrugging slightly. It was just an invitation, whether she accepted it or not, was up to her. With a few more adjustments though, he was able to fix the problem with the holo-projector.
"There, give it a try, it should be more responsive and faster," he commented. Even though it didn't seemed like he was doing a lot, he managed to make tweaks here and there to there machine. Even adjusted the programming a bit to match with what he had done for it all.

and if i could take you everywhere there'd be no cause for my despair. And I know we won't touch for months, And your smell will evade me. But our love could survive a war, Without the slightest sore What was with these Pokemon and all of their noises? As soon as Heracles had made that snort-like noise, Tyr hadn't hesitated to return the gesture. It was as if the Garchomp had taken offence to it. And perhaps he had. Although it wasn't as if Acacia was paying much more attention to them than Alex was, as she listened to his replies.
The first sentence that she heard made her want to make some kind of remark in reply; perhaps an 'of course I know the difference, what do you take me for?" or a "don't act like you know me that well, because you most certainly don't.". But nothing of the sort ever made it past the drafting stages of development. It was the second comment that really stopped her, or rather the second part of the second comment. "you should try to do more than just be a captain." Somehow, it really struck home for her. Okay, fine. She put a lot more effort into her job than what was probably healthy, and she had more devotion than probably anyone else on the space station. But she always managed not to think of much of it, and it wasn't as if anybody ever brought it up to her -- most likely one of those things where people were afraid to offend the person who drove their metal world around. Perhaps it was just a shock to hear somebody finally confront her about it.
Needless to say, Acacia found herself not quite sure how to reply to something like that, since she couldn't deny it but she certainly didn't want to degrade her entire lifestyle by outright agreeing with him. Lucky for her, she didn't seem to have to. Without missing a beat Alex was moving on, and... A bar? What was it about this guy that made her stumble over his constant changes of pace? Oh wait, it was as simple as that, wasn't it? Maybe she was losing her touch (or what little of it she had to begin with).
The techie was inviting her to a bar? Without even thinking, her automatic response sprang to mind: 'I apologize, but I'm usually rather busy with captaining. I doubt I'll have the time, but thanks for asking.' But not today, and certainly not with him. Acacia was going to prove to him that she did indeed have a life beyond her job, and that she was just as capable of taking a break as anybody else. Even if it wasn't going to be as easy as it sounded at that moment. Sure, why not? I'll make a point of stopping by later today." |
Oh, it was on now, wasn't it? As uncharacteristic as it was for her to feel so fired up over something so realistically small, she wasn't going to back down from his challenge now. However, she made a point not to show that energy, and her solemn-as-usual face didn't betray her. The only thing that might have given her away was Heracles -- since he seemed able to read her like a book -- who flicked his tail slightly and flashed her a curious look. She made a point to disregard both, however, as Alex announced that he'd finished his job there. "Thank you for the assistance, as well," She added with a small smile, giving a brief nod in the direction of the now-fixed holo-projector. Indeed, it looked much better off than it had not long before.[/blockquote][/div]

There was a lot about him that little knew, and one of the things was the way he went about life. He never let anything stop him from doing what he wanted to do. "Well, like the way it's running now?" he asked, checking to be sure she was happy with his repair job. Might as well get an evaluation before he left and find out later she wasn't happy with it or something.
When it came to unexpected thing, it seemed he was good at it with the way she seemed caught on her words. Well, that wasn't too big of a deal, he figured not many people would say something like that. He was just trying to stop someone from making the job the only thing about them. Or well, get them to loosen up a bit as well.
"Will you? Then I will wait with baited breath for your arrival," the comment oddly sounding both sincere and slightly sarcastic. An odd mixture, but it was what happened regardless. He would be expecting her now as well. If she didn't show, he would just say that he had been right about the whole thing. Which was probably something she wanted to avoid with him as well.
"Sure thing, is there anything else that needs repairing or maintenance while I'm here?" might as well make sure before he leaves. After all, it'd just be a pain to be called in again for something that had been on the fritz already.
